Chasing Two Rabbits? Here's Why You're Stuck.
"Chase two rabbits, and you will not catch either one." – Russian Proverb
We live in a world that glorifies doing more. More projects, more goals, more hustle.
More is the enemy of progress.
This is where so many creatives get stuck—trying to perfect everything, trying to do all the things at once, and ending up overwhelmed, exhausted, lost.
Gary Keller’s book, The One Thing, argues that success isn’t about doing everything—it’s about doing the right thing. If you want to make real progress, you need to find your One Thing—the single most important action that moves you forward—and prioritise it relentlessly.
That means saying no to distractions. Cutting out busywork that feels productive but isn’t. Committing to daily progress on your most valuable work.
One of my mentoring clients (let’s call him Steve) is an insanely talented designer. Clients love his work. His skills are top-notch.
But he’s stuck. Not because of talent. Not because of lack of ideas.
Steve can’t focus on the One Thing.
He’s tweaking his website for months instead of having conversations. He’s starting three side projects and finishing none of them. He’s quickly cycling around to burn-out town, and frustrated that nothing is moving forward.
Now, remember (for those playing at home): Continual discomfort is okay. It’s growth. It will become a familiar friend.
But staying in the same place because you haven't taken action? That’s not growth. That’s avoidance. That’s keeping yourself distracted from what you know you need to do—regardless of your best intentions. Remember:
"It's not who you are underneath. It's what you do that defines you." – Batman
The truth is, it’s hard to hold yourself accountable. It’s easy to say, “I will focus on my One Thing today!” and then slip back into overthinking and overcommitting.
That’s why I run mentor groups. Because they work.
We help creatives like Steve (and maybe you) stay focused, cut through the distractions, and actually make progress.
So, what’s the one thing you need to focus on right now? Think about it. Write it down. Then commit to it.
And if you need real accountability? That’s what our mentor groups are for.
Come and meet Steve. You'll like him.
